Filmed as a documentary, the film follows the visitors of another planet arriving at Earth, who later become refugees thrown into the slums of Johannesburg called District 9. Stranded on Earth for twenty years, the aliens want to be free. Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), a government agent in charge of transporting the alien population from District 9 to a newer alien-only District 10, is accidentally exposed to a dark liquid from an alien device, and starts to get sick.
