The Klansman is a tense racial drama, similar to "In the Heat of the Night".
Sheriff Bascomb (Lee Marvin) is the entire law enforcement of a small Alabama town. Tensions pass boiling point when Nancy Poteet (Linda Evans) is raped and an innocent black man is blamed. Gart (O.J. Simpson), a zealous executioner, plans revenge. The town's Mayor and head of the local chapter of the Klu Klux Klan (David Huddleston) forces a showdown while Sheriff Bascomb and a local landowner Breck Stancill (Richard Burton) try to diffuse the pressure as the conflict reaches a violent climax.
